Frequently Asked Questions

What is E.C. Stone?
E.C. Stone is a modified acrylic cement product made of Portland cement, silica sand and a modified acrylic resin for its bonding agent. It can be color integrated or stained with different techniques for many choices in appearance.

Is there a warranty?
Eco Colour offers a 2 year warranty on workmanship and labor against: dramatic fading, delaminating, or general product failure. Normal wear and tear of the systems is not covered; however, our EC System can be patched and matched better than most conventional materials (e.g tile, paint, stucco, etc). Optional maintenance plans are available to insure against non-warrantied items such as chipping, gauging, or resealing; this billable cost will include both materials and labor.  Other plasters and finishes offer product warranties that range from 5-10 years depending on the manufacturer.

Is E.C. Stone the only concrete treatment offered by Eco Colour?
No - Eco Colour works with a full line of concrete beautification and restoration products for both residential and commercial use. Eco Colour has different products that can be used over concrete floors, existing counter tops, and even walls. For the commercial setting, Eco Colour offers a line of tough, durable epoxy and urethane floor coatings that can protect concrete even in the harshest of environments.

How thick is it?

E.C. Stone is applied over the existing substrate and is between 3/16" to 1/4". E.C. Stone is a thin-layer of cement, which depends on adhesion through the use of modified acrylics.

What does it look like?

E.C. Stone can achieve a look, texture and color of any type stone or artistic look you require. A base coat is applied that fixes any imperfections in the original substrate. The subsequent layers of the concrete (cement mixture) are styled to create the “art pattern” or stone texture. A final clear coat is put over the system that is nonporous and protects it as well as makes it very easy to maintain. Mold, mildew, motor oil, etc. can be sprayed off with a regular garden hose. Common detergents or a power washer can be used to remove stains that have sat on the area longer. (Heavy foot traffic, pollen,…) Visit our Project Portfolio to see examples of our work

What colors does it come in?
We have a variety of standard colors to choose from. Powder pigments, no VOC liquid colorants, water based and acid stains can custom produce any color you wish. Due to the product being a natural surface, colors can seep into the surface at different strengths. The inherent variations are what make the product appear so life-like and natural.

What substrates can E.C. Stone be applied over?
Pretty much any stable substrate: plywood, lumber, metal, ceramic or porcelain tile, drywall, concrete board, laminate, Formica,… If you have a laminate counter top that is delaminating, we will remove any loose parts until the surface is stable. (The same goes for loose tiles). The E.C. Stone can be floated to fill any differences in slope so that you end up with a flat end result.

Will E.C. Stone fade?

No, not dramatically, E.C. Stone has approximately a 2% fade factor over seven years, which is undetectable by the human eye; our warranty covers this.

Can you correct drainage and low spots?
We can generally improve drainage; however, the degree of success is contingent upon the pitch of the concrete adjacent to the low spot. The low spot will have to be looked at personally by an Eco Colour to let you know what you can expect.

How do you treat cracks in the concrete prior to the E.C. Stone application?
Cracks are cleaned out or ground out if necessary. A fiber mesh is placed between layers of the E.C. Stone.

Can the CTI system be applied to steps?

Yes, E.C. Stone can be applied to steps including risers and treads.

Can E.C. Stone be applied to walls?
Yes. We have many samples of this in our showroom. Also be sure to check the pictures in our website Gallery.

Do you apply the material to cantilever faces and coping stones?
We do apply E.C. Stone to cantilever faces and coping stones. Though application over coping stones is a matter of personal preference, it is often advisable to coat the stones unless they are exceptionally new. If not coated, they tend to look old and dirty after the E.C. Stone is complete. In addition, the older copings, which have deep lips, can be filled in so the coping stones are level with the deck giving a modern cantilevered look.

If the coping stones are not covered, will the E.C. Stone be higher?
No, E. C. Stone is feathered very thin at the joint edge so the coping and decking will be level.

How long has this product been in use?

Acrylic decking has been in use since the early 70's.

Can you level heaved concrete?
Yes, quite easily.

How does the price of E.C. Stone compare with removing and replacing old concrete?
The cost of the E.C. Stone is normally 20%-25% less than the cost of removing cement and pouring new and is much better looking and much easier to maintain than the original cement.

What is the cost per square foot?
The price depends on a number of factors, such as the condition of the original concrete or other substrate, the patterns chosen, etc.

Is there a maintanance plan?

Yes, Eco-Colour Designs highly advises clients to take advantage of our maintance plan which covers all things not under warranty at a set cost in order to prevent failure of your investment. This is a great option for manufacturing facilities, restaurants, dance clubs, and plazas who value the look of the finished product and wish to maintain the system.  Details are discussed on a per project basis. See Preventive Maintenance Plan details.
